Welcome to our Summer Program for Glenbard Township High School District #87! We are excited about the variety of learning opportunities that we have for the students of our District for the summer of 2013.
You will find three types of summer school offerings on our website. The first section is devoted to credit courses that provide Glenbard students with the opportunity to advance themselves by taking courses in the summer that they need to schedule, but may not have space for in their school year, 7 period day schedule. There is also a broad spectrum of core academic classes offered that give students a chance to make up a class failed previously in order to get back on track to graduate. Students in the Glenbard High Schools who fail math, science, social studies, or English classes are expected to attend summer school to make up the credits lost due to course failures in these areas during the regular school year. Students who are on fee waivers during the school year can also attend summer school free of charge
but need to apply for a waiver of fees (see Application for Waiver of Student Fees form).
Classes listed in the first section are offered for Glenbard credit. Glenbard students, however, may also attend classes on the College of Du Page campus if the course times are more convenient to the student or family schedule. Students taking a summer school course for credit from another school other than COD must obtain a pre-approval of the course from their home school Guidance Department Chair.
The second section of summer school offerings on our website are our Bridge courses that assist students in improving their skills in mathematics, english and biology or help them bridge their skills in these areas in order to more effectively manage the demands of high school course work.
The third section of summer school offerings on our website are our Enrichment courses for both Middle school and High school. These are non-credit classes shorter in length than our Bridge courses and are designed to interest students in a number of different areas.
Again, this year, transportation will be available to the four high schools from the middle school or junior high schools in the high school attendance area. The bus service is offered free of charge to Glenbard students to and from our campuses daily.
Our campuses will also be set up for your student to purchase snacks and a light lunch at the conclusion of classes daily in the event that your student may be remaining on campus for afternoon activities. Our food service will provide a limited menu of healthy food choices for our students to purchase on days when summer school is in session.
This information will be updated monthly in our online summer school guide that can be found on our building and district websites. You may visit www.glenbard87.org to access the most up-to-date information about our summer program details.
We hope you encourage your child to take advantage of this very important opportunity to continue their progress in learning during the summer months.

Attendance
One day in the summer program equals approximately one week of a regular school year. Prompt and consistent attendance is mandatory to ensure the same contact hours, teaching and learning opportunities as during the school year. Students should not register for classes for high school credit if they have vacation plans, athletic camps/competitions, or other obligations that prevent them from attending class.
Absences/ Tardies/ Final Exams
District 87 offers a two-semester High School Summer School program. Classes are four hours per day for 16 days, Monday through Friday. These programs are open to high school and middle school students. Summer school is designed to provide students with opportunities to gain academic credit or to explore interests by auditing a class.
Absences
Summer school is a condensed school experience. Classes meet Monday to Friday for four hours per day for 16 days, and students are expected to be present. However, illness and emergencies do occur. Students are allowed two (2) absences per semester course. More than two absences per course, regardless of reason, will result in a "Withdraw" grade being issued for no credit, without refund.
Tardies
Two (2) tardies either at the beginning of the day or the break, per semester course equals one (1) absence. Tardies exceeding 15 minutes equal an absence.
Any combination of absences and tardies that exceed two (2) "days" results in a withdraw grade being issued for no credit, without refund. Parents are asked NOT to register their child for summer high school classes when they anticipate a conflict with their personal schedule. No special arrangements will be made after the allowed two (2) days of absence for any reason.
Final Exams
If a student is enrolled in a class that requires a final exam, the final is given on the last day of class in the semester only.
Parent/Guardian signature on the High School Attendance Policy form constitutes understanding and acceptance of these conditions.
Contacting your Student's Instructor
Should a parent need to contact an instructor for any reason, all instructors will provide a telephone number and/or e-mail address on his/her syllabus. Instructors cannot be reached during class hours or interrupted during instruction time. Please contact the summer school principal if you have any questions or concerns.
Grading Scale/Options
Upon completion of a summer school course, grades will be posted on Powerschool. The letter grades are A, B, C, D, F, or W (withdrawal).
Transcripts are provided upon request only and ate provided by the registrar in the buildings.
Letter Grade
A = 90 to 100 percent
B = 80 to 89 percent
C = 70 to 79 percent
D = 60 to 69 percent
F = 59 percent and below

Grades earned during summer school do not replace grades that were earned during the regular school year when calculating overall GPA.
Audit Grade
No credit is awarded for this course. Students who are looking for enrichment only would benefit from auditing a course The grade is not factored into the GPA. Attendance is recorded and students must adhere to all summer school policies and procedures.
Withdrawal
"W" is received from the instructor when the student has more than two absences (Two tardies = one absence) per semester course or for any violation listed in the High School Attendance Policy or the Student Code of Conduct-Appropriate Use of Computer/On-line Resources Contract. If a student voluntarily withdraws from a course, he/she should contact the summer school principal to officially drop the course to ensure that no grade report is generated.
